Fans of Marvel action hero Spider-Man, may well remember the above quote from Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben, in the Spider-Man 2 movie. Whilst it may sound a touch melodramatic, a CMS (content management system) website is a very powerful publishing tool.
Many businesses invest in a content management system because they want to create and publish new content to their website on a regular basis. Usually the plan is to have their internal staff take care of the publishing. The challenge however is in the doing.
To make a CMS website work for your business, it needs people to be responsible for it, either internally or externally. A content management system demands attention. It doesn't work at all when it is ignored. In fact, it becomes a liability, the longer it sits there doing absolutely nothing for your business.
For a CMS website to be successful, it
needs three things, "a grand vision", "a
wish list" and an "action hero".
The grand vision
The grand vision is the online business strategy. It's the plan that your entire business or non profit organisation embraces and supports. This is your important link with your customers, partners, members etc. When your CMS website is truly part of the grand vision, people within your organisation notice it. They see there are staff members who are accountable and responsible for the website. It becomes relevant and important to your organisation.
The wish list
The wish list is the online marketing strategy, SEO strategy and the
content design plan. This is a detailed plan that focuses on marketing
the website both now and in the future to your target market. It gives the CMS website momentum
and a roadmap to follow. The wish list should preferably be long and neverending, with a steady
stream of new content and marketing ideas added regularly.
The action hero
The action hero is the key to a powerful CMS business website. This is the web publisher or web manager, responsible for the maintenance and management of the website on a day-to-day basis. The web publisher ensures that the grand vision and wish list are adhered to along with the content and publishing deadlines. In this role, the web publisher provides the CMS website with substance and value.
Having a strong strategy in place at the start of your online journey can help to elevate your website to a position of importance within your business or organisation. This helps to ensure there are responsible and dedicated resources and services available to manage, maintain and publish content on a regular basis. Providing your content management website with everything it needs for a bright and successful future.
